Answers to GMX Installation Questions

How hard is it to install the GMX System? Can I install GMX myself?

Yes. If you can put gas in your car you can install the GMX System. It is very easy and we are always available by telephone to help you out if needed. Many of our customers email us digital pictures of their installations so we can verify the GMX devices are properly installed. You can see some of them here: Cold Water and Hot Water.

Please review the "installation instructions" by clicking on the "More Information" link below the system description on each of the following pages: GMX Home Systems or GMX Pool / Spa Systems.

Why do I need devices on my water heater?

As the water enters your water heater it has just been fully treated by the two or three devices on your main incoming cold water line. During the water heating process and over time (24 to 36 hours), the surface charge on the minerals dissipate to about 25% to 50% level, therefore, we need to boost the treatment, as the water leaves the water heater, to ensure excellent results with all hot water using appliances (dishwasher, clothes washer, shower, etc.). This is also done to ensure there is no scale build up on the hot plumbing fixtures and inside the hot water pipes.

In a typical home, with one water heater of any capacity, we recommend full re-treatment with two devices (GMX-4800 Home System), after the water heater, to ensure good results.

All customers with an "On Demand" or "Tankless" water heater should use the GMX-4800 Home System.

Actually, the above requirements apply to ANY kind of water storage tank, not just water heaters. This is why we recommend treating the incoming cold water line, AFTER the pressure tank, on well systems.

Will the heat from the hot water pipe or the water heater damage the GMX device?

No. The GMX device can be exposed to temperatures as high as 300 degrees Fahrenheit indefinitely. Water heaters have a maximum temperature of 160 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. See GMX specifications here.

Can the GMX device be mounted on Horizontal and/or Vertical pipes?

It does not matter. The GMX device can be mounted at any angle and in any position. Just make sure the water flow, through all the GMX devices of your system, is the same direction. IE: In the "G" and out the "X" or visa-versa. See pictures here: Cold Water and Hot Water.

Can the GMX water heater device be placed over the corrugated copper flex line?

Yes, you can place the GMX device(s) on the copper flex line. Usually this is just above the water heater or as the pipe goes into the wall. Either or both locations are fine. See the specific installation instructions for your system GMX-4800 System) for details.

Can the GMX device be buried underground?

Yes. In most installations (here in the southwest) the incoming cold water line devices are buried underground.

Can the GMX devices get wet and/or be exposed to the outside elements ?

Yes. The GMX devices are sealed in a Lifetime UV Rated Poly Vinyl Chloride Coating. This coating prevents corrosion and damage from water and the ultraviolet rays of the sun. See specifications here.

Can I hire a plumber to install the GMX System for me and what will it cost?

Yes. Most plumbers will come out to your home and installed the GMX system for just the price of a standard service call ($35 to $75). It usually takes less than 30 minutes to install the GMX system. Complete installation instructions are shipped with every system and they are available on our website. You can have your plumber give us a call or review the installation instructions in advance. Just let your plumber (or installer) know which system you are purchasing.

Answers to General Questions About the GMX System

Why do salt based water softener companies and others say Magnets Don't Work?

Two Reasons:

  • First there is the many inferior magnetic devices (or just magnets) on the market today. We have addressed that issue further down this page, click here.

  • Second is because they don't (and don't want to) understand the technology and/or how the GMX system functions. Salt based water softener companies have always measured the effectiveness of their systems using a "water hardness" aka: "mineral content" test. A salt based system is designed to remove the minerals from the water and replace them with salt. That is why salt based water softeners make your skin feel slimy.

That is NOT how the GMX system functions. The GMX system does not remove the minerals from the water. GMX changes the way the minerals in your water behave, it does NOT remove them. Therefore, when they attempt to measure the effectiveness of the GMX system using their "mineral content" test, it appears the GMX system is not working. Our 10's of 1000's of satisfied customers disagree. For customer testimonials, click here. For more information on how the GMX system works, click here.

I see you have a Money Back Guarantee, do you get very many returns?

We get very few systems back from the field. The returns are usually due to the following reasons, in order of frequency:

  • High Iron Content: Some people believe that, because the GMX system is magnetic, it will suck the iron our of their water. GMX does not work that way. High Iron Content means: Severe staining after about a week. A little bit of iron staining does not cause a problem for the GMX System. For more about Iron, click here. To learn how the GMX system works, click here.

  • Improper Installation: We see this also. Almost as often as iron problems. Just recently, we were at a customer's home in the Phoenix area. The homeowner had spaced the incoming line devices 2" apart, the directions say 1" apart. His reason: "I didn't think it mattered", well, it does. I spaced them the proper distance (1") and gave him another 90 days to try out the GMX System. I'm sure he will be happy now. Please follow the installation instructions that come with your GMX System. They are also available on our website. Follow links from here: Home Systems or here: Pool and Spa Systems.

  • Improper Sizing: Be sure to check your water hardness and water heater quantity before ordering. Having the correct system will ensure your satisfaction. Whole House Systems

Will GMX remove the minerals from the water?

No. The minerals that are in the water are good for your health. The problem is that they are bad for your plumbing and your wallet. The GMX system will keep the minerals in the solution so they do not accumulate in your plumbing or on your water heater element. This is also why there is no need to have a separate plumbing system (water softener loop) outside for your lawn and indoor plants, as with salt based water softeners.

How does the GMX System work and what does it do?

The GMX System uses scientifically designed magnetic devices to alter the way calcium behaves when suspended in water. Lime and Calcium are normally very sticky substances that act like "Glue". This glue (lime and calcium) causes the minerals in your water to stick to almost everything they come in contact with. This is particularly true when water is heated and as it evaporates.

When water passes through the GMX device, the calcium and other minerals adopt a small surface charge and loose their stickiness. The minerals then pass on through your plumbing system, without attaching to anything, and go down the drain. In the process, calcium build-up is dissolved, your plumbing and sewer system is cleaned, and water flow returns to normal. See more information here: How GMX Works.

Does GMX replace my drinking water filter or reverse osmosis system?

No. The GMX System replaces the salt based water softener unit only. Any under sink filtration or reverse osmosis system you may have, should still be used. You will find that your filters last much longer and your system will require less maintenance.

How does the GMX System compare to a salt based water softener?

For a side-by-side comparison chart, click here.

What does the U.S. Government have to say about the Magnetic Water Softening Technology?

Please review this Federal Technology Alert: Non-Chemical Technologies for Scale and Hardness Control, (U.S. Department of Energy Technology Alert # DOE/EE-0162) January 1998.

What About Iron?

There are two basic types of iron. One we can help with more than the other.

  • Ferric Iron: This type of iron we can help the MOST with. This iron "piggy backs" calcium and gives you the streaks in the toilet bowl. This also is the type of iron that causes orange or brown stain where the water drips in your tub, sink, etc. GMX may not totally eliminate this type of iron (depends on severity), but GMX will make it easier to clean off and it won't come back as soon. This is the type of iron that most people encounter in their homes. Worst case would be is, the iron staining would be easier to clean off and it won't come back as fast.

  • Ferrous Iron: This type of iron is a real problem. It appears clear when drawn, but when the water comes in contact with air, the iron oxidizes (turns to rust) and will be visible as red discolored water. This iron then settles out as a film or small rust particles. You might also get splotches of orange on your light colored laundry -- not just yellowing all over, but vivid stains. GMX will help with the Cleaning of FERROUS IRON off your fixtures but, the overall results are often less than satisfactory.

Often, people are willing to try our system because we have such a good guarantee that is based on your satisfaction... and because other systems to eliminate iron, are going to be much more expensive. In most cases a GMX System can improve your iron problem and eliminate the hard water problems in your home at a reasonable cost.

How will the GMX System save me money?

The U.S. Bureau of Standards reports that just 3/8" of scale build-up on the heating element or flew, of your water heater, requires 55% more energy to heat your water. That means an additional $300 or more, a year, for the same hot water. Also, you will save money on scale related plumbing repairs and appliance replacement. Primarily your shower heads, hot water heater and dishwasher.

Why is GMX the best product on the market?

Quality control and effectiveness. We use the best materials available and our research has developed the most effective product sold today. ALL GMX devices are checked prior to packaging to insure Zero defects in the field.

How long will it take for the GMX System to pay for itself?

For the typical homeowner, without a salt based water softener, the "Return Of Investment" is usually between 12 and 18 months due to the energy, soap, and shampoo savings. If you have a salt based water softener, it is usually under 12 months because you do not need to add salt and other chemicals, not to mention the price of service calls.

There are many companies selling all kinds of Water Softeners and Conditioners. Why should I buy a system fromClearwater GMX?

GMX International (the manufacturer of the GMX System) is a 14 year old debt free company at the forefront of the residential magnetic water softening industry. The GMX System uses leading edge magnetic technology to produce the finest system on the market. We're so confident of this that we offer, a no-questions-asked, 120 Day Money Back Guarantee and a Lifetime Warranty.

We sell "Magnetic Water Treatment" that works. We are the leader in Residential Magnetic Water Treatment Technology.

"Magnetic Water Treatment Technology, when properly applied, is a viable alternative to the out-dated water softener technology that is being advertised as the "Only" way to eliminate hard water problems."

Clamping a set of magnets over my water pipes is going to solve my hard water problems?

NO. You cannot just strap magnets around your pipes and expect them to soften your water. They Won't Work. This is also why many of the salt based water softener companies say "Magnets Don't Work". The magnetic device MUST be properly designed. The GMX Magnetic Devices are scientifically designed specifically for softening water. Accept no imitations. GMX has spent the time and the money on R&D to bring you the Best and Most Effective Magnetic Water Treatment System on the market today. The GMX System carries a 120 Day Money Back Guarantee and a Lifetime Warranty.

BEWARE of Companies who:

  • Do not provide a complete address and contact information prominently on their website.

  • Do not accept credit cards directly.

  • Use a third party credit card processor like Paypal because......

    • They are not a REAL business. Their units are probably made in their garage instead of being manufactured in a controlled and clean environment.

    • They have not invested the time or money to have their own credit card merchant and bank account.

    • They cannot be trustedto handle your credit card and personal information securely or even qualify for a merchant account at all.

    • The are using Paypal to insulate themselves from having to give a customer their money back.

  • Make unreasonable demands in their money back guarantee. This is how they avoid giving you your money back when you purchase through Paypal or on eBay.

  • Want the product returned and re-packaged exactly the way you received it and it must look unused. This usually means they are reselling used units as new units. We encourage you to compare the details of their money back guarantee to ours. We will even refund the shipping costs both ways.

What is the difference between the GMX Devices and other "so called" magnetic water softening magnets?

There are MAJOR differences:

  • Design, Design, Design: If the magnetic water treatment device is not properly designed... it is worthless. The GMX devices are scientifically designed to be the most effective magnetic water treatment devices on the market today. Accept no imitations. To see more GMX design notes and product specifications, click here.

  • Construction: Our devices are NOT made out of plastic. Our devices are built with heavy duty steel backing and support plates, which helps to focus the magnetic energy directly into the water flow. Plastic units or unprotected magnets can radiate harmful magnetic energy. You want the magnetic energy in the water flow, not the surrounding area.

  • Quality: Each and every one of our devices are checked for the proper strength and magnetic field orientation PRIOR to coating. Then rechecked for proper orientation and strength just before the device is packaged to insure ZERO defects in the field.

  • Contact Time: The GMX System has the LONGEST (10+ inches) contact time of any residential system available today. Almost twice as much as our nearest competitor. After all, we are the LEADER in this technology. We DO NOT cut corners so we can make our systems less expensive. We want HAPPY and SATISFIED customers, not just customers.

  • Strength: Only the GMX devices have the FOCUSED FIELD configuration. We do not just wrap magnets around your pipes like other companies do. We FOCUS the magnetic field directly into the water flow by using our heavy duty support plate and the carefully designed metal plates inside our packages. Our system has the highest "Seeding Effect" available.

Example: Have you ever noticed the magnets that hold cabinet doors closed? Have you ever noticed how sometimes it can be real hard to open the door? Take a close look at the magnet. It is actually very small with a metal plate on each side "focusing" the field on the contact plate on the door. When both metal plates come in FULL contact with the door plate, it can be pretty hard to open the door. This is the configuration used in ALL GMX devices and is the KEY difference between us and them, and why our devices do the job, as promised. See more on this page: How GMX Works

  • Customer Service: Clearwater GMX offers the best customer service available. There is almost always someone available to answer your questions over the phone (8am EST to 5pm PST) or via email (until midnight) . We pride ourselves in providing Complete Customer Service to insure total customer satisfaction and Happy Customers.

What is the difference between the GMX system and your primary competitors?

We are asked this question quite often. Our primary competitors use:
spacerblackdotElectronic units, boxes with wires wrapped around pipes.
spacerclackdotCatalytic in line units.

All three of these systems (GMX, Electronic, Catalytic) essentially do the same thing to the water. But, they use different technologies to excite the minerals in the water.
spacerblackdotGMX - Strong DC Magnetic Fields.
spacerblackdotCatalytic - Various Metallic Elements in direct contact with the water.
spacerblackdotElectronic - High Frequency Electronic Pulses creating a weak AC magnetic field (compared to GMX).

The magnetic (DC) technology has been around for almost 100 years, though not as effective as a salt based water softener until the scientifically designed GMX devices came along. The catalytic technology has been around..... maybe 10-15 years or so. We believe the electronic boxes with wires around pipes have been around for less time.

First - Different Technologies: Catalytic and electronic units only treat the cold water as it enters your home. They are ignoring the fact that the "excited" minerals "calm down" when they are heated and after about 24 to 36 hours or so. This is why it is absolutely necessary to boost or retreat the water as it leaves a water heater that stores hot water.

With a GMX System you receive additional devices to be placed on the water heater output to fully treat both the hot and cold water in your home.

Second - The Maximum Effective Hardness Level: The catalytic and electronic units are only effective up to between 15 and 25 grains per gallon (257 and 428 ppm or mg/l) of hardness . Recently one of the high priced (2000) electronic units claimed to be effective to 100 gpg. We question that effectiveness level. The effectiveness would be substantially less on the hot water side.

GMX will effectively soften both the hot and cold water in your home with hardness levels from 0 to 55 grains per gallon (0 to 940 ppm or mg/l).

Third - Installation: The catalytic units must be mounted in line. You need a plumber to cut the pipes and install these units in an out of the way place. The electronic units need a reliable source of electricity and must be protected from the outside elements.

The GMX devices easily clamp around the outside of your existing water pipes. They do not require an electric power source or a plumber. The GMX devices can be installed outside, exposed to the elements, and even buried in the ground...... Without compromising the Money Back Guarantee or Lifetime Warranty. Just about anyone can install the GMX System.

Fourth - Warranty: Catalytic units usually have about a 5 year warranty and electronic units usually come with only a 3 year warranty or less. These units also come with only a 90 day money back guarantee that does not including shipping costs. Some even charge restocking fees.

All GMX devices come with a 120 Day Money Back Guarantee and a Lifetime Warranty, including the shipping costs in both directions. It costs you nothing to give the GMX System a try. We do this because we are confident the GMX System will solve your hard water problems.

Fifth - Longevity: A catalytic unit uses several different metallic elements that come in direct contact with the water. These metallic elements can dissolve into your water over time which causes these units to have a limited life span beyond the 5 year warranty period. An electronic unit can be destroyed at any time by power surges or spikes that render it useless.... in or out of the 3 year warranty period. There is also the possibility of interference with radio, television, wireless internet and telephone signals. This is because they use pulsed electronic fields that can radiate RF energy in the surrounding area.

The GMX devices are clamped around the outside of existing pipes. There is no chance of the GMX System contaminating your drinking water supply.

GMX does not use electricity. Therefore, GMX cannot be destroyed by power surges or spikes. GMX also uses a shielded DC magnetic field as a power source that does not radiate and cannot interfere with any wireless electronic devices.

And finally, the GMX devices have a minimum life expectancy of at least 125 years and they come with a Lifetime Warranty.

Summary: When you consider the draw backs of these other technologies, GMX is clearly the best choice and the last water softening device you will ever have to purchase. Also, you can easily take a GMX system with you when, and if, you move. GMX Home Systems.
