Independent GMX
System Evaluation
December 2005 - April 2007
University
of California at Davis,
Tercero South Dormitories,
Student Housing
A bit of
background....
Two identical brand
new dorms with 200 occupants each with
separate but identical domestic hot
water systems went on line at UC
Davis in September of 2005.
In December of 2005,
after almost 3 months of operation
with no water treatment whatsoever on
either system, the tube bundles were
removed from the tanks and
photographed.
At that point GMX was
installed on building # 2. GMX was
NOT installed on building # 1.
In June of 2006,
after six months of parallel
operation with no devices on building
# 1, and the GMX Devices installed on
building # 2, the tube bundles were
removed and photographed again.

These
pictures, taken in December of 2005, show
the untreated tube bundles from the
boilers in buildings 1 and 2. The dorm
has been in use for 3 months, since the
start of the 2005-2006 school year. Scale
was just beginning to form on the boiler
tubes.

Untreated
boiler tube in bldg # 1. After 9 months
of use without GMX. Scale
continued to form and grew thicker and
crustier.
|
Treated
boiler tube in bldg # 2. After 9 months
of use, 6 months with the GMX devices
installed. Scale build-up was
less than 6 months earlier. You
can now see the copper tubes at the top.

Bundle from
bldg # 1 (sorry it is so blurry) after it
was scraped with a steel brush. It is
hard to see, but scale had severely
etched into the copper and would only
partially brush off.
|
Bundle from
bldg # 2 after it was scraped with a
steel brush. The remaining scale build-up
easily brushed off. This boiler tube
should be completely clean in a few more
months of using GMX.
|
After
6 months of GMX Magnetic Water Treatment
the University of California at Davis (UCD)
found the following:
1. There was less
scale build-up on the bundle in
building # 2 than on the untreated
bundle in building # 1.
2. There was less
scale build-up on the bundle in
building # 2 than was present 6
months earlier. GMX dissolved some of
the previous or existing scale build-up.
3. The scale build-up
was "light and powdery" on
the bundle in building # 2. The scale
build-up was "thick and crusty"
on the bundle in building # 1.
4. Scale build-up had
etched into the tube bundle in
building # 1, but did not etch into
the GMX treated tube bundle in
building # 2.
5. Scale build-up
easily scraped off the GMX treated
bundle in building #2, but would not
scrape off of the untreated bundle in
building # 1 to the same degree, even
with very aggressive scraping.
The Bottom Line:
UCD Student Housing found
the GMX Magnetic Water Treatment to
be beneficial, helpful and
worthwhile. It reduced scale build-up
and changed the chemical nature of
the scale so that it is easily
removed.
Update: 04-24-2007
Since January 2007
UCD has installed additional devices
on the other dorm (building # 1) and
they have treated their swimming
pools. Many of the employees and
other UCD personnel have installed
the GMX System on their own homes and
are very happy with the results.
